The Independent Investigation Unit is looking into an injury of a suspect after Brandon police deployed a “less-lethal” firearm on Monday night.

Officers were responding to a call about a man at a residence at around 11 p.m. when he allegedly threatened them with a knife. Police tried to make the man surrender the weapon, but he fled, throwing the weapon at a vehicle near where an officer was standing.

Police fired a less-lethal firearm toward the 28-year-old suspect, causing him to suffer a contusion on his back. He was treated in hospital and later released into police custody.

The IIU is asking anyone with information or who may have video footage to contact them at 1-844-667-6060.
