The Winnipeg Wesmen have gone local to find their latest recruit for the women’s basketball squad.
Maltha Uwambajimana comes from Fort Richmond Collegiate and dreamed of suiting up for the Wesmen before she even began her high school athletic career.
“In Grade 8 is when I first watched the Wesmen play and ever since then I’ve always wanted to play here,” Uwambajimana said.
“I saw the (Manitoba Basketball) Hall of Fame (at the Duckworth Centre) and then I was like ‘Wow, I really want to play here now.’ It’s always been in the back of my mind hoping Tanya (McKay, head coach) would recognize me and hopefully offer me to play for them, so this is very exciting for me.”
The FRC guard signed her national letter of intent for the 2020-21 season prior to a recent Wesmen game.
“She’s tenacious on ‘D’ and she can push the ball on offence,” McKay said. “I think she’s going to bring that speed and smarts. I just think her speed, her quickness, her athleticism just separates her from other guards in her conference. She’s going to bring some really tough guard defence and I think we’re really going to be able to press teams next year.”
