Officer Injured During Arrest of Suspect with a Sword

A Manitoba RCMP officer suffered an injury Thursday during an arrest of a suspect armed with a sword.

Police say they were called for a suspicious man walking in the back lane behind 12th Avenue South in Swan River. Officers located the suspect a block away near 11th Avenue South.

While confronting the man, police noticed a large sword under his coat and asked him to drop the weapon. The man complied and he was arrested. During the arrest, an officer was injured and suffered a broken bone.

The 43-year-old suspect, from Wuskwi Sipihk First Nation, was taken to hospital for medical issues unrelated to his arrest and later released. He faces charges of carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest.

RCMP continue to investigate.
