WINNIPEG — The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is looking into an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Tuesday in Point Douglas.

Winnipeg police say at around 8:15 a.m., an officer-involved shooting occurred at a residence in the neighbourhood. One man was taken to hospital in unstable condition but has since been upgraded to stable.

According to the IIU, police were executing a search warrant at a home on Barber Street when police located a suspect armed with a knife. One officer deployed a Taser on the suspect, but he was able to flee the residence. Officers chased after him on foot until the man was located on Hallet Street. The IIU says officers gave verbal commands for the man to drop the knife and he was subsequently shot by one of the officers.

The man was transported to the Health Sciences Centre and is recovering.

Anyone with additional details is asked to contact the IIU at 1-844-667-6060.
