Wildfire crews are working to suppress a fire near a northern Manitoba First Nation that has forced some residents to leave the community.

The Manitoba government says unfavourable wind conditions has increased the size of a fire near Pimicikamak Cree Nation.

The Canadian Red Cross is assisting with evacuation support.

More favourable conditions, including rain and a shift in wind direction, is expected over the next two days.

The Manitoba Wildlife Service says wildfire danger in central and eastern parts of the province is high to extreme, but low to moderate across most of the north.

There are nine active wildfires currently burning in Manitoba.
