WINNIPEG — A new apartment complex featuring affordable units is now open to residents in the city’s southwest area.
The Bridgwater officially opened on Wednesday in the ever-growing Waverley West suburb of Bridgwater.
Developer Paragon Living is behind the 143-unit, six-storey building at 250 Centre Street. Of the units, 18 will be classified as affordable, while 125 market units will round out the building’s offerings.
“Affordable housing is critical to ensuring Manitoba families can thrive in our communities,” said Housing, Addictions and Homelessness Minister Bernadette Smith.
“Our government is committed to working with our partners across municipal, federal and Indigenous governments and in the private sector to build and maintain social and affordable housing and help keep rents lower for all Manitobans.”
Constructed with concrete and steel, the pet-friendly building offers one-, two- and three-bedroom units, with free water and high-speed internet. Residents also have access to a lounge with outdoor patio, dog run, and fitness facility. The first tenants are scheduled to move in beginning August 26, with 100 percent of the building already fully leased.
The Manitoba government, through the National Housing Strategy, contributed $348,000 towards the $36.5 million complex. That contribution allowed for the selection of affordable units, which will be priced at $981 per month. The low-cost units maintain the same luxury standards and amenities as the market-rent units, according to the developer.
Construction on The Bridgwater commenced in October 2022.
