WINNIPEG — Westbound Portage Avenue between Strathcona and Empress Streets will be reduced to one lane starting November 25 for Manitoba Hydro repairs near Omand’s Creek.
The lane closure will remain in place until March 2025, while eastbound traffic is unaffected.
The City of Winnipeg and Manitoba Hydro say the project involves replacing aging underground electrical chambers from 1939 to prevent future failures.
“Replacing the aging infrastructure now will prevent a possible failure later that could cause a significant power outage,” said Peter Chura, Manitoba Hydro media relations officer, in a release. “We realize this creates a significant traffic disruption and we appreciate the public’s patience.”
One transit stop will be cancelled during the closure. Riders will have to board and disembark one stop earlier or later. Transit riders and drivers are advised to plan alternate routes or use the Waze app for traffic updates.
