A Manitoba RCMP officer previously charged with a Highway Traffic Act violation now faces criminal charges after further investigation into an August 2023 traffic stop near Dauphin.
Cpl. Kevin Challoner, initially charged with failing to drive with due regard for safety, now faces charges of assault causing bodily harm and dangerous operation of a vehicle.
The charges stem from a traffic stop on August 29, 2023 when the officer observed a man driving a motorcycle dangerously and at a high rate of speed on Highway 5. Attempts to conduct a traffic stop were unsuccessful. After several near-collisions, multiple police units were able to contain the motorcycle.
The Independent Investigation Unit announced the new charges on Friday following its inquiry.
As the case proceeds in court, the IIU isn’t providing further comments.
