Manitoba RCMP and Winnipeg police have kicked off the 2024 Festive Season Checkstop Program to enhance road safety during the holidays.
Running throughout December, the initiative focuses on apprehending impaired drivers through alcohol and drug screenings.
Every driver stopped in Winnipeg will undergo mandatory breath testing, while officers across the province will use advanced tools to detect drug impairment, such as cannabis and cocaine.
“While road safety is top of mind for police throughout the year, the increase in travellers, particularly those who are out celebrating the season, is one of the reasons that enforcement like Checkstop is necessary,” Winnipeg police said in a release.
Authorities emphasize planning safe rides, with options like taxis, ridesharing, public transit, or Operation Red Nose.
