WINNIPEG — A new temporary fire-paramedic station is up and running in the city’s ever-growing Waverley West area.
The modular station, located at 130 Eaglewood Drive, opened on Thursday and will service a fire engine and four-person fire/rescue crew, and an ambulance and two-person paramedic crew.
“Fast-growing communities like Waverley West need strong fire, paramedic, and police services to ensure residents get the help they need, when they need it most,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham, in a release.
“That’s why we’re opening this new fire-paramedic station today, and why our preliminary 2025 budget makes significant investments in public safety.”
The city says the new station will reduce emergency response times in Waverley West until the permanent station can be completed.
When it’s no longer required in Waverley West, the temporary station will be disassembled and reassembled wherever needed next.
The total cost for the interim modular station and site development was approximately $6.8 million, with $1.3 million coming from the federal government.
An official opening ceremony will be held on January 11, 2025, where residents will be invited to visit the new station.
It will serve the community of approximately 60,000 people for two years until a permanent fire hall opens in 2026. Construction on that facility, to be located at the corner of Bison Drive and Ruth Crossing, will begin next year at a cost of $12.2 million.
