A recent report out of Westman has revealed an uptick in the number of homeless individuals in Manitoba’s second-largest city.

Brandon‘s 2024 Point-in-Time (PiT) Count, conducted on October 17 last year, identified 229 unhoused people in the city. The count, which spanned 24 hours, combined survey data, service and transitional housing records, and observed homelessness.

The findings mark an increase in homelessness compared to previous PiT Counts conducted since 2016, according to a report released by the Brandon Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation.

“The results of our count represent the minimum number of people experiencing homelessness in Brandon,” said Rushana Newman, executive director for the Brandon Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation, which led the count.

“The numbers and details we gathered will help improve our understanding of the needs and circumstances of the people who are affected by homelessness in our city.”

Nearly 50 volunteers, local agencies, and businesses collaborated to conduct the count. Newman emphasized the importance of the data in advocating for vulnerable populations and securing funding for essential programs.
