Police have arrested a 45-year-old woman following a parental abduction investigation that spanned from Manitoba to Ontario.

Steinbach RCMP were alerted Wednesday night by the 47-year-old father in the RM of La Broquerie, stating that his wife had left with their two daughters, aged 12 and 8, and he suspected they were attempting to flee the country.

An initial investigation revealed the mother and children had been at Winnipeg’s James Richardson International Airport earlier that day and had boarded a flight to Toronto. By 8 p.m., Peel Regional Police located the trio at Toronto Pearson International Airport as they were preparing to board a flight to Turkey.

The mother was taken into custody and is facing charges of parental abduction. She will be returned to Manitoba to appear in court. The two children have been placed in care and arrangements are underway to bring them back home.

RCMP continue to investigate the incident.
