A 56-year-old woman from Bloodvein First Nation has been charged with second-degree murder following the death of a two-year-old girl.
On January 24, Manitoba RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious child death after the toddler was brought to the local nursing station with serious injuries. She was later pronounced deceased.
Investigators searched the child’s home, and an autopsy confirmed homicide as the cause of death on January 27.
On January 29, RCMP arrested Burma Skye, the child’s primary caregiver, and charged her with second-degree murder. She has been remanded into custody.
“The homicide of a two-year-old girl is not just a loss for her family but a profound loss to the community,” said Sgt. Laura LeDrew, RCMP Major Crime Services lead investigator.
“This is a senseless crime that will have a profound impact on the community, first responders and investigating officers. Our number one priority right now is seeking justice for the victim.”
RCMP continue to investigate.
