New research from the Fraser Institute is painting Winnipeg as the “most-dangerous city” in Canada when it comes to violent crime.
The unfavourable distinction is part of a think tank study entitled “Comparing Recent Crime Trends in Canada and the US: Urban Areas.”
Researchers cited five major metropolitan areas, Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal, to support their findings.
The violent crime rate across all Canadian census metropolitan areas ranged from a high of 675 per 100,000 in Winnipeg, to a low of 102 per 100,000 in Sherbrooke, Quebec with an average of 262 per 100,000.
Winnipeg fared a bit better when it came to property crime, sitting in the fourth spot on the list, while Lethbridge, Alberta ranked first.
“When it comes to Canada’s five largest cities, Calgary and Vancouver have the distinction of comparatively higher rates of violent and property crime, respectively, compared to the country’s other major metro areas,” said Livio Di Matteo, senior fellow at the Fraser Institute and author of the study.
“Crime rates in Canadian cities, while still historically low, are on the rise and should be of greater concern for both citizens and policymakers.”

The data was compiled using available crime trends from 2019 to 2022.
Winnipeg police publish frequent data using CrimeMaps on their website. Residents can also subscribe to weekly E-Watch emails to find reports of break-ins and stolen vehicles in their area.
