The Manitoba government is investing an additional $540,000 to combat aquatic invasive species (AIS), with a new prevention fund and equipment purchases.

The funding includes $410,000 for AIS prevention initiatives, such as the new Manitoba Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Fund, which will support municipal and Indigenous governments, non-profits, and water-user groups in implementing local prevention efforts. An additional $130,000 will be used to purchase equipment for AIS mitigation.

“Manitobans care deeply about our beautiful lakes and rivers and we want to ensure that all Manitobans will be able to enjoy them for generations to come,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Mike Moyes.

Later this spring, watercraft inspection stations will be set up throughout Manitoba to help water users comply with AIS requirements. Anyone transporting motorized or non-motorized watercraft over land must stop at all open watercraft inspection stations along their route. Operating schedules for the stations will be posted on the AIS website.
