Winnipeg police have charged two people in connection with the misappropriation of approximately $60,000 from a legion in the city’s Weston neighbourhood.

Police aunched an investigation in December 2023 after receiving a report of suspicious financial activity. Investigators identified a 70-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman — both from Winnipeg Beach — who held unpaid operational roles at the legion and had authorized access to its bank account.

Between May 2020 and April 2023, police allege the pair transferred legion funds into their joint account and used the money for personal expenses. The male suspect also paid himself an unauthorized honorarium.

Both were arrested without incident on Wednesday and charged with theft over $5,000 and fraud over $5,000. They have been released on appearance notices.
