Winnipeg crews have kicked off the city’s annual mosquito control program, aiming to stop the pests before they become a summertime nuisance.
The initiative began this week with larviciding to target mosquito larvae in water before they mature into biting adults.
This year’s program includes a 100% biorational larviciding campaign using ground equipment and helicopters, as well as monitoring and treatment of more than 28,000 hectares of water.
The first numbers from the city’s New Jersey light traps will be posted online by Thursday.
If required, adult mosquito control will be done using DeltaGard 20EW. Residents will be notified 24 hours in advance of any fogging, with daily updates posted on treatment locations.
Residents can apply for a 90-metre buffer zone by contacting 311.
