A boating outing on Lake Manitoba ended in tragedy on Thursday after two men from Sandy Bay First Nation went missing in the water.
According to RCMP, the men — ages 41 and 22 — launched their boat near the community’s water treatment plant earlier in the day. The boat reportedly malfunctioned, and strong winds prevented the Sandy Bay Fire Department from launching a rescue.
A bystander later saw both men attempting to swim to shore without life jackets. They were last spotted approximately 200 metres from Halls Beach.
Search efforts involving RCMP underwater recovery teams from Manitoba and Saskatchewan, along with the Manitoba First Nation Police Service and the Sandy Bay Fire Department, began shortly after.
On Friday morning, the body of the 22-year-old was recovered on shore. The search for the 41-year-old man remains ongoing.
