A 54-year-old woman was shot by a Carberry RCMP officer Monday evening after allegedly acting erratically and brandishing a weapon on Highway 1.
RCMP were called to the Trans-Canada Highway near Road 88 West at around 9:30 p.m. for multiple reports of a person walking into traffic and climbing onto vehicles.
When the first officer arrived, he found the woman in possession of an edged weapon and attempted to de-escalate the situation. Police say the woman ignored commands and advanced toward the officer, prompting him to fire his weapon.
The woman, from the RM of North Cypress–Langford, was taken to hospital in stable condition. The officer was wearing an activated body camera, and the footage has been turned over to Manitoba’s Independent Investigation Unit, which is now leading the investigation.
