The Calgary Surge used a massive third-quarter surge to defeat the Winnipeg Sea Bears 98-86 on Friday night, closing out their season-opening road trip with a 2-1 record. Calgary outscored Winnipeg 33-14 in the decisive frame and held a commanding 58-38 edge in points in the paint.
Sean Miller-Moore led the Surge with a career-best 29 points, while Jameer Nelson Jr. added 25 points and a game-high +27 efficiency. The visitors also forced 15 turnovers, converting them into 27 points, and dominated the fast break 22-3.
“I was really proud of the way we battled back in the second quarter,” Sea Bears head coach and general manager Mike Taylor said after the game. “They punched us in the mouth early… I think it took us a while to get going.”
Jaylin Williams paced the Sea Bears (1-1) with 21 points and six rebounds, and Terry Roberts recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 assists. Despite a strong second-quarter comeback to trail by just one at halftime, Winnipeg couldn’t recover from Calgary’s explosive third-quarter push.
The Sea Bears return to action on Sunday in Calgary for a rematch with the Surge. Winnipeg returns home on Wednesday, May 28, to face the visiting Vancouver Bandits at Canada Life Centre.
