The Manitoba government is investing $1.65 million to expand and upgrade the Virden Regional Airport.
The funding will go toward key upgrades, including an automated weather observing system, an extended runway, and improved lighting. The enhancements will allow for 24/7 medical transfer flights, better weather tracking for STARS Air Ambulance, and expanded commercial and charter operations.
“The Town of Virden is thrilled to have the support of the province for the upgrades to our regional airport,” said Virden Mayor Tina Williams, in a release.
“As well as experiencing large commercial expansion and attracting new business to our community due to this project, the health care and safety of our entire region will be immeasurably improved as a result of the province’s investment.”
The announcement was made Monday in Virden by Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Glen Simard, town officials and the Virden Airport Commission.
