Winnipeg Transit rolled out the most significant service change in its 142-year history on Sunday with the launch of the new Primary Transit Network and expanded On-Request zones.
The redesigned system features a spine-and-feeder model, offering simpler routes, more frequent service, and improved citywide connections. The first bus under the new network departed Portage Avenue and Spence Street at 5:32 a.m.
“This is the biggest overhaul of transit service in our history. Routes are simpler, service is more frequent, and riders will have better connections across the city,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham, in a release. “I encourage everyone to check out the new Winnipeg Transit.”
The number of On-Request service zones has also tripled, growing from four to 12.
Transit staff will be stationed at high-traffic areas this week to help riders adjust. Trip planning tools, including Navigo and the Transit App, have been updated to reflect the changes.
