WINNIPEG — With July marking the peak month for drowning deaths, the Lifesaving Society Manitoba is using National Drowning Prevention Week to raise awareness about water safety and drowning prevention.
“Already this year, we’ve seen numerous water-related deaths in Manitoba,” said Lynne Stefanchuk, executive director of the Lifesaving Society Manitoba. “Drowning is preventable, and we hope all Manitobans take steps to reduce the risk.
This year’s theme, Safer Together, promotes key safety measures such as swimming with a buddy, staying within arm’s reach of children, wearing lifejackets, and choosing lifeguard-supervised areas.
Throughout the week, landmarks including the Esplanade Riel Footbridge and Winnipeg Sign will be lit blue, and the Lifesaving Society logo will appear on the Manitoba Legislature dome to mark the campaign.
The society will host events including a kickoff at a Valour FC game, a newcomer water safety circle at Elmwood Community Centre, and a visit to Swan River to celebrate local aquatic safety efforts.
