An Ontario man is in custody after RCMP say a stolen truck linked to an armed robbery near Oakbank was tracked down later the same day in southern Manitoba.
Police said the incident began around 4:30 a.m. last Friday, when a man entered a business at Deacon’s Corner on Highway 1, showed an employee a firearm, and demanded fuel be unlocked. The suspect fled in a yellow pickup truck. No one was injured.
Later that evening, Morris RCMP were called about a suspicious vehicle in the RM of De Salaberry. Officers from St. Pierre-Jolys joined the search and later found the truck abandoned in a field on Road 25 North. RCMP units, including the Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Service, and drone operators, surrounded the area and arrested the driver without incident.
The pickup had been reported stolen near Dryden, Ont., and the firearm is believed to have been taken in St. Narcisse, Que.
Mitchel Duncan, 30, of Ontario, faces more than a dozen charges, including robbery, assault, using a firearm in the commission of an offence, possession of stolen property over $5,000, and multiple weapons offences. He remains in custody.
RCMP continue to investigate.
