Winnipeg police are boosting patrols on city buses and at transit stops in response to a sharp rise in violent incidents.
In 2024, 325 violent crimes were reported on Winnipeg Transit property — almost triple the number from 2019 — and the trend has continued into this year.
The safety strategy, launched on Tuesday in partnership with the City of Winnipeg, will see more officers riding buses and patrolling around shelters and stations. Both uniformed and plainclothes officers will target high-risk areas and disruptive behaviour.
Police say the goal is to prevent and suppress crime while working with Winnipeg Transit and the community safety team.
Everyone – riders, operators, and transit staff – deserves to feel safe,” police said in a release.
“Violent and disruptive conduct will not be tolerated. This initiative is rooted in prevention and protection, aiming to foster a transit system that is welcoming, reliable, and secure for all Winnipeggers.”
