Winnipeg police are alerting residents to a new phone scam in which fraudsters pose as bank employees and claim a credit or debit card has been compromised.
Victims are told to cut up their card but keep the chip, place the pieces in an envelope, and give them to a courier for pickup. Police say scammers then use the chip data to steal funds or create fraudulent accounts.
Police urge the public to hang up on suspicious calls, contact their bank using the number on the card, and never hand over cards to couriers. To disable a card, cut directly through the chip.
