A 30-year-old man faces multiple charges after a string of random assaults and property damage incidents in downtown Winnipeg on October 1.
Winnipeg police say the suspect allegedly began the crime spree at around 9:40 a.m. in a parking lot on the 300 block of Broadway, smashing vehicle windows. When a security guard intervened, the man allegedly struck him with a stick, stole his radio, and used it to break windows at a nearby building before fleeing.
The suspect then randomly punched two men on Broadway — one aged 61 who was not injured, and a 22-year-old who was taken to hospital in stable condition. He later damaged property at a government building on the 400 block of York Street, where sheriffs detained him until police arrived. One sheriff was assaulted but not injured.
Brendan Jay Chabauty, 30, has been charged with assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, assaulting a peace officer, multiple counts of mischief, and failing to comply with a probation order. He remains in custody.
