A Manitoba RCMP officer has been charged after an investigation into the arrest of a man in Portage la Prairie last summer.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba says the incident occurred on July 21, 2024, when officers responded to a shoplifting call and located a suspect on a bicycle near Fisher Avenue and Third Street NW. The man fled but was later arrested. While in custody, he reported chest pain and difficulty breathing and was taken to hospital, where doctors found a punctured lung.

Following its investigation, RCMP Const. Ryan MacDonald was charged with assault causing bodily harm.

The agency first announced the investigation on July 23, 2024.
