October 16, 2025 6:30 AM CDT | News

The Winnipeg Police Service has unveiled a new memorial dedicated to the police dogs who have served the city since 1971.

Located beside the K9 Unit building at 77 Durand Road, the Winnipeg Police Canine Memorial features a bronze statue titled “Forever Faithful” by California artist Susan Bahary, surrounded by four granite pillars engraved with the names and years of service of past police dogs.

The project was nearly a decade in the making, funded through community donations and fundraising events. A pathway of 436 engraved stones, contributed by citizens and organizations, leads to the monument.

Since its formation, more than 78 police dogs have served with the WPS, assisting in locating suspects, protecting officers, and keeping Winnipeg residents safe. Police say the memorial offers a lasting place for reflection and remembrance of the service dogs’ loyalty and service.
