A 17-year-old boy from the RM of Portage la Prairie is facing multiple charges after a violent carjacking and police pursuit last Friday.
Manitoba RCMP say the incident started around 8:45 a.m. on Fisher Avenue West, when a male youth attempted to carjack one vehicle, then stole a truck from a 77-year-old man after threatening him with a box cutter. The victim suffered minor injuries.
The suspect fled east on Highway 1, striking another vehicle driven by a 64-year-old woman, who was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The youth continued toward Oakville, prompting a precautionary lockdown at Oakville School as officers moved in.
Police say the suspect hit a cruiser while trying to escape through the school’s parking lot, sparking a pursuit north on Highway 13. The chase ended when the stolen truck rolled into a ditch near Provincial Road 430.
No officers were injured, though three police vehicles were damaged.
The teen faces numerous charges, including robbery with an offensive weapon, assault with a weapon, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, impaired driving, and assaulting a police officer.
RCMP continue to investigate.
