Manitoba Public Insurance is changing how students register for its Driver Z program, moving away from the first-come, first-served system that often led to long lineups at broker offices and service centres.
Beginning with spring 2026 courses, eligible students will be assigned a multi-day registration window rather than competing to sign up on a single day. Families will be able to register during their assigned window at any MPI Service Centre or insurance broker.
Driver Z is MPI’s driver education program for high school students, combining classroom, online and in-car instruction. The program costs students $50, with MPI covering more than $600 per enrollee.
To be eligible for spring registration, students must create an MPI customer profile and purchase the Driver Z program service in person with a parent or guardian by January 3, 2026. Emails assigning registration windows will be sent between January 5 and 24, with older students receiving earlier selection periods. MPI expects to offer more than 2,700 spots across the province.
General registration will open afterward if space remains. Course locations will be listed on MPI’s online Course Finder starting December 12, 2025.
“This new approach to registration aims to take the stress off parents and students who were having to rush to try and get a spot on the same day as every other eligible customer in the province,” said Dana Frazer, vice-president and chief operations officer at MPI.
