Winnipeg police arrested a 44-year-old man late Thursday after a vehicle pursuit that ended near Île-des-Chênes and left two officers with minor injuries.
Police say they were alerted shortly before 10 p.m. that a distressed man was driving erratically in Transcona parking lots and heading out of the city. Officers were also told the man had made concerning statements about his own safety and that of others.
At about 10:20 p.m., officers spotted the vehicle — a 1993 Ford Aerostar — near Lagimodiere Boulevard and Elizabeth Road. When police attempted a stop at the Perimeter Highway overpass, the driver refused and continued south.
During a forced stop attempt near Leclaire Road at Highway 59, the driver rammed two police vehicles, sending one into a ditch and putting it out of service. The suspect continued to flee but was stopped a short time later near Île-des-Chênes, where he was taken into custody.
Two officers sustained minor injuries during the collision.
The man is charged with four counts of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, fleeing police, and uttering threats. He remains in custody pending further proceedings. His name wasn’t released.
