Winnipeg police have charged a 31-year-old woman after a fire in an apartment building on Mayfair Place early Friday morning forced residents to evacuate.
Officers were called shortly before 6 a.m. to reports of a fight and a fire in a suite in the 1–99 block of Mayfair Place. Police say a resident set a mattress on fire inside her suite and then pulled a fire alarm, prompting a temporary evacuation of the building.
Officers arrested the woman nearby without incident. No serious injuries were reported.
Police determined the fire was deliberately set following a dispute with family members.
The woman faces charges of arson with disregard for human life and arson causing damage to property. She was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
