Winnipeg police say a drug trafficking operation tied to an Ontario-based gang has been disrupted following a joint investigation with police in the Greater Toronto Area.
The investigation, known as Project Hydrogen, began earlier this year when Durham Regional Police uncovered a drug network connected to a gang known as “44.” Police later determined members of the group had travelled to Winnipeg to establish a local trafficking operation.
In August, Winnipeg police joined the investigation and learned express courier services were being used to ship illicit drugs from the GTA to Winnipeg. Police intercepted two packages in November containing a combined 2,600 hydromorphone pills with an estimated street value of nearly $19,000.
Search warrants were executed on December 11 at a suite on Edmonton Street and a related vehicle, leading to the arrest of two men. Police seized cocaine, more than 3,000 hydromorphone pills, cash, cutting agents, fake identification, cellphones, and drug packaging materials.
Both suspects, who are from Scarborough, Ontario, face multiple drug trafficking-related charges and remain in custody.
