Manitoba authorities are reminding riders to take safety precautions as International Snowmobile Safety Week begins today.
Running from January 10-18, RCMP, Manitoba Public Insurance, and Snowmobilers of Manitoba are highlighting safe riding this winter season.
Officials say snowmobilers should wear approved helmets and safety gear, control their speed, ride sober, and stay on signed and groomed trails. Under Manitoba law, all riders must wear an approved helmet, and children under 14 must be supervised by an adult.
“Winter is a wonderful time of year for snowmobilers to hit the trails and enjoy the season, but we strongly urge everyone to ride safely,” said RCMP Staff Sgt. Matt Lavallee, who teaches snowmobile safety courses to RCMP members.
“Snowmobilers need to ride in a responsible manner so that everyone returns home at the end of the ride.”
RCMP say officers will be patrolling trails across the province and enforcing snowmobile laws as needed. Over the past six years, 28 snowmobile-related deaths have occurred in Manitoba, including four in 2025. Speed and alcohol impairment were identified as common contributing factors, along with lack of helmet use and driver inexperience.
According to MPI, January and February are the deadliest months for snowmobiling in Manitoba.
Riders are also reminded to watch for hidden hazards, cross roads safely, and operate their snowmobiles within their skill level.
