Winnipeg police have charged a man after three women were randomly assaulted in the city’s skywalk system last week.

Police say the incidents occurred on January 8 between 6:00 and 6:45 a.m. as the women were walking to work. The first assault happened around 6:30 a.m. in the Millennium Library Skywalk, where a man grabbed a woman and attempted to take her backpack. She yelled and fled to safety, suffering a minor injury that did not require medical attention.

Shortly afterward, a second woman was confronted in the Graham Avenue Skywalk, where the suspect allegedly yelled obscenities and pushed her against a railing before fleeing.

A third woman was then threatened in the same area, with the suspect allegedly threatening to stab her, slapping a coffee cup from her hand, throwing it at her, and pushing her. The woman defended herself, and the suspect fled.

Police were notified and foot patrol officers located and arrested the suspect at about 7:30 a.m. in the skywalk near St. Mary Avenue.

Randy Herman, 40, has been charged with robbery, two counts of assault, assault with a weapon, and uttering threats. He was detained in custody.
