Winnipeg police are searching for a suspect after a taxi driver was robbed at gunpoint early Thursday in the William Whyte neighbourhood.
Officers were called just after 12:35 a.m. to the 1100 block of Main Street, where a driver reported being robbed by a passenger. Police say the suspect asked to be dropped off in the 400 block of Charles Street, then produced a shotgun, demanded the driver’s belongings and ordered him out of the cab.
The driver was assaulted during the incident, though no shots were fired. The suspect fled with the driver’s property before police arrived. The victim suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics.
The suspect is described as Caucasian or Indigenous, about 35-years-old, with a heavy build, between 200 and 300 pounds. He may have facial hair on his chin and was last seen wearing a black jacket and a black toque. He was armed with a shotgun.
Anyone with information or video footage from the area around the time of the incident is asked to contact police at (204) 986-6219 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at (204) 786-TIPS.
