The Manitoba government is now testing 24-7 snow-clearing operations on the Perimeter Highway during inclement winter weather.
Through a new agreement with the Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union (MGEU), the province can activate plows using two 12-hour shifts during major storms. The agreement took effect on January 22.
“This agreement is about keeping Manitobans safe and moving when winter weather hits,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor.
“Bringing back 24-7 snow clearing on the Perimeter Highway means crews can respond faster during major storms and provide a higher level of service when our communities need it most.”
MGEU president Kyle Ross said the deal supports workers who keep highways open in difficult conditions while improving safety for drivers who rely on the Perimeter Highway.
The province says the move will help reduce disruptions and improve travel safety on one of Manitoba’s busiest roadways during winter storms.
