Winnipeg police have laid charges against two women accused of abducting a child on Friday that resulted in an Amber Alert being issued.
A two-year-old child was abducted from a home on Chesterfield Avenue in St. Vital that morning. Police issued the alert just before 1 p.m.
Police say officers were initially called to the residence at around 10:09 a.m., where they learned a dispute had taken place between the child’s biological mother and two female suspects. The mother was allegedly assaulted with a weapon and the child was taken.
At approximately 1:35 p.m., officers located the child and two suspects at a strip mall in the 300 block of McPhillips Street, where they had travelled via taxi. Investigators say a concerned citizen, who recognized the suspects and child after seeing the Amber Alert, intervened and brought the child to safety before police arrived.
The toddler was taken to hospital in stable condition and was not injured.
Police arrested Caitlin Cassandra Monkman, 30, and Kineisha Rose Jawbone, 25. Both are charged with abduction of a person under 14 years of age and assault with a weapon, among other offences. Jawbone also faces a drug possession charge after officers allegedly seized methamphetamine during processing. Both remain in custody.
Police continue to investigate.
