A Winnipeg man is facing charges after four migrants were intercepted near the Canada–U.S. border west of Emerson.
The RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region’s Integrated Border Enforcement Team intercepted the suspected migrant crossing on December 5, 2025 roughly 10 kilometres west of Emerson in the RM of Montcalm. RCMP were working with the United States Border Patrol at the time of the incident.
While patrolling the area, officers spotted a vehicle that appeared to speed away after the driver noticed police. The vehicle was stopped and the driver was arrested following a traffic stop.
Officers then located four migrants near the vehicle. They were arrested without incident and transferred to the Canada Border Services Agency in Emerson.
Police say the driver, Bereket Wondwes Wube, 31, of Winnipeg, has been charged with a counselling offence under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
Wube was scheduled to appear in Emerson provincial court on Thursday.
The investigation remains ongoing.
