A 32-year-old U.S. citizen has been sentenced to prison following an investigation into human smuggling and fraud-related offences.

Sahil Aziz was sentenced on Wednesday in Manitoba Provincial Court after pleading guilty to organizing entry into Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and smuggling fraudulently obtained credit card data.

The Canada Border Services Agency says Aziz received a two-year prison sentence for the human smuggling charge, along with time served for the credit card data offence, for a total sentence of 34 months.

The charges stem from an incident on February 7, 2025, when Aziz attempted to enter Canada alone at the Emerson port of entry. During a search of his vehicle, border officers discovered multiple identity documents, including one belonging to another person, along with a suitcase and cellphone not linked to Aziz.

Further investigation determined another individual had been with Aziz prior to the attempted border crossing. It’s unclear if that person was able to cross into Canada.
