The province says the spring thaw is underway across southern Manitoba, including the U.S. portion of the Red River basin, as temperatures continue to rise.
According to the province’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre, river flows and water levels are expected to increase gradually, creating potentially dangerous ice conditions on rivers, lakes and drainage ditches.
Officials warn that while ice may still appear solid, it is likely thinning and may not support people, vehicles or snowmobiles. Activities such as skiing, sledding and snowmobiling on frozen waterways are considered hazardous and should be avoided, the province says.
Residents living near rivers and other waterways are urged to keep children and pets off the ice, as conditions continue to deteriorate.
