Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating the death of a 34-year-old man following a police response in Winnipeg.

Officers arrived and found the man unconscious on the floor. Police say he appeared to be in medical distress. He was handcuffed for safety reasons while officers provided aid and called for an ambulance.

The man was transported to St. Boniface Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The IIU has taken over the investigation and no further information was released.
