A Winnipeg woman is facing charges following alleged hydro meter tampering in the city’s Glenwood neighbourhood.
Winnipeg police launched an investigation in late March 2026 after Manitoba Hydro reported a customer’s meter had been tampered with, resulting in stolen electricity.
According to police, a load limiter had been installed on the home’s meter on March 12 due to non-payment, restricting power usage to essential heating during the winter months.
When a Hydro worker returned to the residence on March 25 to remove the limiter after the account was paid, it was discovered the device had been forcibly removed and the meter had been altered.
Investigators allege the tampering allowed electricity to be used without payment between March 12 and March 30.
Police arrested a 46-year-old woman on April 15 without incident. She has been charged with mischief under $5,000 and theft under $5,000, and was released on an appearance notice with a future court date.
Authorities say cases involving hydro meter tampering and electricity theft have been increasing, and incidents reported by Manitoba Hydro will continue to be investigated, with potential penalties including fines or imprisonment.
