(BPS / HANDOUT)
A Brandon police officer has been charged with assault following an investigation into the arrest of a male youth at a local high school last year.
The incident occurred on June 10, 2025, when BPS officers responded to reports of a male armed with an edged weapon who was out of control at the school. Officers used a Taser to take the youth into custody, after which a second use-of-force encounter occurred. The youth was transported to Brandon Regional Health Centre, examined, and released back into police custody.
The Independent Investigation Unit launched an investigation soon after and has now concluded that charges were warranted.
BPS Const. Darren Shewchuk has been charged with one count of assault.
As the matter is now before the courts, the IIU says it will not comment further.
