The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will induct the late Cal Murphy into the Ring of Honour at Princess Auto Stadium this season.
Murphy, who died in 2012, served as the Blue Bombers’ head coach, general manager and eventually both, from 1983 to 1996. He will be formally honoured at halftime when Winnipeg hosts the B.C. Lions on Thursday, July 30.
“Cal was such an important part of the Blue Bombers for his many years with the club as a coach, a GM and a steadfast voice for Canadian football,” said Blue Bombers president and CEO Wade Miller. “Strong-willed and passionate in his beliefs, he had his hand on the rudder during one of the most successful eras of Blue Bombers football.
The Murphy family said in a statement they were grateful for how fondly he’s still remembered as Winnipeg’s own Canadian-born head coach and GM, describing him as supportive, stern, a strong leader, a devoted husband and father, and a man of deep Catholic faith.
Murphy helped lead the Blue Bombers to three Grey Cup titles, in 1984 as head coach and in 1988 and 1990 as GM, and won CFL Coach of the Year honours in 1983 and 1984. He was also a key figure in bringing Winnipeg its first Grey Cup hosting opportunity in 1991.
Murphy was inducted into the Winnipeg Football Club’s Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2004. A statue of him was unveiled outside the stadium in 2017, and the club has handed out the Cal Murphy Heart of a Legend Award annually since 2001.
