WINNIPEG — A portion of Corydon Avenue is closing to vehicle traffic every Sunday this summer for a new pedestrian initiative called Open Corydon — Little Italy.
From July 5 through September 6, Corydon Avenue will be closed to vehicles between Lilac Street and Daly Street each Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., turning the strip into a car-free zone for 10 weeks.
The closures will make room for expanded restaurant patios, open-air dining, and space for pedestrians, cyclists and families to walk freely down the street. The Corydon Avenue BIZ also plans public art installations, including new eight-foot metal silhouette sculptures, along with festoon lighting and floral displays along the sidewalks.
“We are unlocking the street’s full potential by removing the cars and creating a destination where people want to slow down, linger, and connect,” said Melissa McRae, chair of the Corydon Avenue BIZ board.
Detours will be in place for motorists during the weekly closures, and businesses along the strip will remain accessible. Visitors are encouraged to walk, bike or use active transit to get there.
