The Winnipeg Police Service has unveiled a newly designed cruiser created in partnership with the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs.
The cruiser, which was revealed outside of police headquarters on Smith Street Tuesday, is aimed at strengthening relationships with the Indigenous community.
The cruiser will be used exclusively by the Community Relations Division. Brian Hunter, a contemporary artist of Red River Métis descent and a WPS member, designed it.
While the design honours Indigenous cultures, teachings, and traditions, police say its purpose extends well beyond appearance, representing a step toward building trust and acknowledging the history, resilience, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples in the community.
Members of the public will be able to request the cruiser’s appearance at events such as pow wows, parades, and other community celebrations.
