The City of Winnipeg will begin its adult nuisance mosquito control program Saturday night, after trap counts pushed the city-wide rating from medium to high.

Recent rainfall across much of Manitoba, including Winnipeg, has created an abundance of standing water — perfect breeding ground for mosquito larvae.

Fogging is set to start, weather permitting, in 14 insect management areas across the city at 9:30 p.m.

The city-wide trap count now sits at 84 — nearly four times the threshold of 25 female mosquitoes in traps for two consecutive nights that the city uses to begin fogging. At least one city quadrant reports 100 or more female adult mosquitoes.

Spraying will take place nightly between 9:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m., and will not occur during heavy winds or when temperatures drop below 13°C.
