The Icelandic Festival of Manitoba, known as Íslendingadagurinn, returns to Gimli for its 137th year over the August long weekend.
This year’s theme, “Interconnected Shores / Tengdar Strendur,” celebrates the resilience of community and the layered histories of the region, honouring the contributions of community groups whose lives became intertwined on the shores of Lake Winnipeg.
“This year’s theme of interconnected shores is deeply meaningful for many of us. It reflects both the tenacity of the Icelandic who arrived here over 150 years ago, and the community groups who ensured their survival in those first years,” said Icelandic Festival president Sigrun Asmundsson, in a release.
Festival organizers are expecting more than 20,000 visitors from July 31 to August 3 to learn about Icelandic culture and heritage.
